Toy Dog Breeds
The Toy Breeds can be separated into those who are happiest as a companion dog and those who thrive in a busy household with children who understand how pets should be treated. Bred over the centuries to be companions and happy to take as little or as much exercise as offered.
Breeds like the Pug, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Griffon Bruxellois, Affenpinscher and the Bichon breeds are full of fun and fit well into a home where there is lots going on. In fact these breeds will all take well to mini-agility, a sport that is fun for both trainer and dog and will keep the dog’s mind stretched.
Coat Care and Housetraining
Think, too about coat care. If you are attracted to a breed by their lovely coat, ask yourself how you are going to manage it. Will you have the time and be prepared to learn the skills to keep it loooking nice, or will a regular grooming be an additional expense?
Toy dog housetraining can be quite difficult, mainly because puppies are so small it’s hard to read the signals that they need to go outside or to their training pad. Bad weather adds to the difficulties as small breeds are more sensitive to weather than the bigger breeds and may resist being taken outside, and then refuse to do anything.
Pros and Cons of Children and Toydogs
An advantage of small breeds is that there is never a battle of strength and children learn how to handle their pets gently. This way they learn to respect animals and set up an attitude for life.
More delicate breeds are really not suitable for the rough and tumble of a family; on the whole, if they look very fragile assume they are until you are convinced differently.
Bear in mind that toy breed puppies really are tiny and need to be kept safe and handled very carefully, not very easy with young children in the house.
It is always worth checking with Rescue organisations for adult dogs who need new homes. It goes without saying that you should be clear about a dog’s temperament before bringing it home. What might be acceptable in an adults only household may cause real problems when there are children.
