This is so totally indulgent and delicious that I couldn’t even take a picture of Molly and Betty sampling them – they disappeared too fast. Just like humans, dogs don’t need too many high-calorie treats and you should adjust their main feeds to compensate for the ridiculous amount of calories they get in these rich and awesome truffles. Simple to make, it’s just peanut butter, banana, honey and bacon.
Frozen Peanut Butter and Bacon Truffles
- 6oz/150g crunchy peanut butter
- 2 small or 1 large banana, sliced
- 2 tbs honey
- 4 rashers of bacon
Mash the banana, add the honey and peanut butter and mix thoroughly. It will be a little runny and need chilling for 2 – 3 hours. Meanwhile finely chop the bacon and fry until crisp. Drain the fat and discard. Spread the bacon over kitchen towel and cover with another sheet to blot all the fat. Use a rolling pin to crumble the bacon as finely as possible.
Once the peanut butter and banana mix is well chilled form into small balls, about the size of a walnut or pecan. The mix is still pretty sticky so you might want to use disposable gloves to shape them. Keeping the gloves wet makes the job easier. Chill once again for an hour or so on a baking sheet. Once they are nice and firm roll them in the bacon crumbs and freeze for 2 – 3 hours. Your dog will just love these, they are irresistible.
An alternative is to stuff a Kong with the mix, stirring the bacon crumbs in rather than coating individual truffles.
