Gairside Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen
Our very first dog was an Irish Setter back in 1978 but after seeing an English Setter at a local dog show in 1979 we purchased a bitch from the famous Suntop kennels and began exhibiting. We had reasonable success with this lovely breed, registered the affix Gairside in 1979 and bred three litters.
At LKA in 1982 we first noticed a class of PBGVs and were smitten by the little hounds, but it was 1999 before the circumstances were right to own one. Our first Basset Griffon Vendeen was a Petit from the Kandecx Kennel called Kandecx The Phantom Menace (Henry). We soon leant the meaning in the standard of voice freely used, very embarrassing as he use to bark all the way around the show ring. Kandecx Old Huckleberry (Webster) a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, soon followed he was the second GBGV to gain a SHCM, and went on to become an Irish Champion.
We have two home bred English Champions, Ch Ir/Ch Gairside I’m Still Waiting and her daughter Ch Gairside Sans Souci and we’ve campaigned five GBGV’s to their Irish Champion titles. We are currently campaigning a homebred dog who is the first GBGV to gain a Junior Warrant and has gained 3 RCC.
We also exhibit in Europe. At the World Show in Paris Ch Ir/Ch Gairside I’m Still Waiting won a CACIB and Gairside Sans Souci won the RCAC. The CACIB win qualified as an entry to the FCI Centenary World Champion of Champions Contest in Brussels. We didn’t reach the last 64 but were proud to represent English owned GBGV’s. We also exhibit at the French Elevage for our breed when location permits.
As members of the BGV Club from 1999 we have helped at Discover Dogs at Crufts and Earls Court, attended several Breed Seminars with our dogs as assessment exhibits and attended every AGM since becoming a member. Colin was elected to the committee at the AGM in 2007 and became Treasurer and Show Secretary at the following committee meeting, serving in these roles until the AGM in 2010. He has recently re-joined the commitee for a second term.
